Starting January 1, 2024, students must show double the previous amount in their bank accounts. To be eligible for a study permit, students need CAD 20,635, in addition to tuition and travel costs. This increase reflects the rising cost of living and aims to ensure students have adequate funds for their stay.

2. Off-Campus Working Hours Reduced

A temporary policy allowed students to work more than 20 hours per week during the pandemic. However, this ended on April 30, 2024. From May 1, students can work only 20 hours per week, with the limit increasing to 24 hours starting this fall. This change marks a shift back towards pre-pandemic norms.

3. Cap on International Student Inflow

In January 2024, Canada announced a cap on the number of international students. The cap for 2024 is set at 3.60 lakh approved study permits, a 35% decline from 2023. This new policy aims to manage the growing number of international students, with provinces and territories given the power to allocate their share.

4. Restriction on Post-Graduate Work Permits (PGWP)

Starting September 1, 2024, students in certain licensed programs will no longer be eligible for a PGWP. This move targets programs with less oversight, ensuring that only students in genuine courses benefit from post-graduation work opportunities.

5. Limited Open Work Permits for Spouses
